{Japan} Good Eats in Sapporo, Part 2!

After we wrote our first Good Eats in Sapporo blog post, our friend, Ludwig suggested we visit the Ramen Alley aka ラーメン横丁 (Ra-men Yo-ko-cho). When we searched online for reviews, they were largely mixed. We figured out why though… in that tiny alley, there are at least a dozen ramen stores. Depending on which ramen store you go to, your experience may vary!

“We ordered a local favorite – Hotate Ramen (Scallop Butter Corn Ramen). It was delicious! We’ve been eating mostly pork based ramen that this was a refreshing new flavor to us! It’s miso based and instead of pork, we get 4 large scallops and corn!”

So we decided to do what we’ve learnt so far on our trip to Japan – Always go for the one that has the longest line. The one we picked was packed but by the time we sat down, everyone left, so it was a little quiet when it was our turn to sit down and eat. We found out that the store had a “Best Ramen 2009” award, so we felt we made a good choice and we weren’t disappointed!

We ordered a local favorite – Hotate Ramen (Scallop Butter Corn Ramen). It was delicious! We’ve been eating mostly pork based ramen that this was a refreshing new flavor to us! It’s miso based and instead of pork, we get 4 large scallops and corn! We added garlic to the soup and that just took the flavor up a notch! Words fail to describe how rich that made the soup! Should you give Hotate Ramen a try, don’t forget to always ask for “nin-ni-ku” (garlic!).

Our bill came to 1,300yen (we shared a bowl so we can go try something else later for Round 2 of dinner!). Ramen Yokocho is only about a couple minutes walk from Susukino Station (Nanbaku Subway Line).

Enough said… here are pictures:

REMEMBER:

  1. If you ever get lost, look for a hotel and ask the concierge for directions. They almost always know where the famous locations are and usually have a map ready to point out directions to you.
  2. Get 1 order of a dish and share. That way, you can go eat something else after that and squeeze in 2 meals for dinner! Or, order different dishes per person, so you can swap and share.
  3. Miso Ramen is a must try in Sapporo. There are many many ramen stalls and variations of the miso ramen you can try. Go try as many as you can!
  4. Genghis Khan BBQ is another must try. Our favorite is Jingisukan Daruma. Make sure you drop by there for a meal!

Glad you enjoyed it! My friend Rob went a few years ago and he had great things to say about Ramen Alley. Have fun in Tokyo, I'm so jealous! If you're hungry for more ramen and you're around Shinjuku station, go to Nagi in Golden Gai. That's where I had my first ever bowl of REAL ramen and it was incredible.
