We realized recently that when we asked around what everyone’s most memorable trips were, many would say “road trip with family when I was a child“. While some would reminisce on recent trips they’ve made, a majority would recall their childhood road trips as their most memorable trips.
We are no different. Our most memorable trips are the ones we took with our family when we’re young.
Just because we’re all grown up now does not mean it’s the end of family trips. Even though we’re on the other side of the world from our family (they’re in Asia, we’re in North America), we still make it a point to go on a family trip once a year!
Last year, we went to India.
It’s not the destination but the experience that matters.
My favorite moment of our trip to India was when all 7 of us (Jeremy is on the top bunk taking pictures) squeezed into one cabin on our train ride from Jodhpur to New Delhi to eat our dinner that we got to go right before we boarded the train. We ate our dinner with our luggages overlaid with newspaper as our ‘dining table’. It was the best meal we had on our trip.

Road trips with family are the best. We had one last and it left everyone of us with unforgettable memories. We are hoping to do that again soon.

We went on family trips every year when we were kids. Mostly road trips to either Austria or Hungary. They were so much fun! Nowadays family trips mean visiting parents back home twice a year, but it’s still heaps of fun. I’d love to take my parents on a trip though, that would be great!

You definitely should take your parents on a trip! It’s one of our favorite trips. We just got back from a 12 day trip to China with our parents (yeap, parents and parent-in-law included!) and a few other family members! It was a lot of fun! Definitely a great way to bond.

We had this one camping trip when my family and I went camping.I was very young at the time when we went. When it was becoming dark out we heard that there was talk of a bear going through some of the camp sites. Though my mom locked the keys in the car. So we were all in our tent hoping the bear wouldn’t come to our camp site. I was feeling pretty sick so I ended up throwing up on my pillow. To top all of that later on in the night it started raining heavily and there was flooding beginning. We ended up making it through the night. We broke into our car and got the keys out and made it home.

Agreed! Family travel has been the most memorable and enjoyable travel experiences for us. Our favourite travel experience was our wedding in Mexico in 2008. Sure, the beach was fun, but what made it so special was having family and friends with us for an entire week. We have since made it a priority to join any friends and family on future destination weddings!

That’s great to hear! We too are hoping to be able to attend more destination weddings! We unfortunately had to decline one in Bali recently because it didn’t work with our schedule 🙁 HOpefully more will come our way in the future 🙂

We usually go for summer trips to cool off, and these are very enjoyable. We get to rough it out and it is more fun than being stiff and proper in formal dining. The best time to bond, true, and we come out of them better good natured and happier.

I think you have enjoyed that travel with your family much. And the news paper as a table was very funny and amazing idea of having the meal. Thanks for this nice post.

Haha – yeah, we had to improvise since there was limited table space!

I couldn’t agree more with everybody who is of the view that family trips ate indeed the best. I usually find fun in hanging out with the family members, and trust me, it is nothing compared to the road trips or just trips that I go with friends. It is a very special moment being together with the family members.

I do agree with you. Families are the most unbreakable bonds that we have. Spending time with them is a lot more precious than spending time with friends. My family always have trips on holidays and they were the most unforgettable ones. Which was your most memorable trip with your family? Anyway, you have really great posts in your blog. And also, thanks for sharing this article!

Families are the best to talk with, play with and be with. When I lived miles away from my family I felt lonely. I always missed our happy moments. Thanks for sharing. Indeed it inspires me more.

I like road trips with family (and friends) and have fond memories, too. Important to plan a bit, though, so as not to overwhelm the youngest ones… do the long, boring stretches of road at night when they’re asleep, and so on…

That’s a great idea! that’s probably why i don’t recall the long boring stretches of road too… coz my parents probably planned it so they were at night while we, the kids, were asleep!

Its beautiful, travelling with the family. We can enjoy so much more, we always have at least a couple of journeys together! And that shot is gorgeous, did you visit Mumbai also during your India trip?

You are absolutely right! What a great reminder. This is why we travel with our kids. There is something very bonding about traveling together. One of my best travel memories as a kid was driving down to California in a motor home with my family of 7. My Mom remembered with regret some of the snafu’s and felt badly about it, but I remembered just the opposite. It was getting lost on Christmas Day and eating spagetti-os for dinner because everything was closed by the time got un-lost (and laughed about it) that made it so fun and memorable! I love to think about this in terms of my own children’s experience as we embark on our big journey!

Your kids will one day reminisce on their experiences with you, for sure! One of my favorite road trips was also a caravan trip in Brisbane, Australia. All I remember are all the fun memories of the trip. I dont even remember if we got lost or any part of the long drive. I remember cooking breakfast in the caravan, eating in the caravan, stopping at all the sights and having a great time with my family!
